Jake Letters Sent to Mom and Dad

LETTER 1: Mon, 31 Jul 2006

Subject: 7-31-06
From: "Jacob Hathaway"
To: dhathaway@cut.net
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2006 15:43:54 +0000

Hi Mom and Dad!
Wow, sorry it's been a while- last week I had full intention to write, but our time was completely supressed. Constant work- on a preparatoin day. Oh well.

So, how are things going for you? I'd try to respond to your last letter, but forgot to bring it with me. So, anyway, things are going well out here. Lately, we've started to see how great the missionary work can go out here if and only if the members play a huge role in finding new investigators. Some almost think it's too much to ask of them to do missionary work, but we're trying to work with them at dinnersas well as stopping by their houses to ask for referrals. In fact, there are a total of 9 people that we know about in the area that we might be able to teach, as a result of member missionary work. We'll see how that goes. They're just people who know the members and are already friends with them- who don't know very much about the gospel, but there is most certainly more potential there that in a full week's worth of knocking doors.

There's a good chance that I'll be transferred on the Wednesday following this one, though I won't know where I'm going until the Saturday before. That'll be interesting. Still, if I do get transferred, I'll really miss this area. I guess the saddest part, is seeing an area with the amazing potential it has, not reach that potential. If the missionary work here was pushed forward by these awesome members talking to their friends about the gospel, this could be the fastest growing ward or stake in the south, I think. Still, you have to have patience with them; I remember what missionary work I did before my mission- pretty much none.

Anyway, not too much is new down here. It seems to be around 1 in every 15 people we teach at doors end up letting us come back. Which isn't bad- just takes a while, then it's a matter of making sure they're there for the return appointment. So, anyway, I better get going. I love you!

-Graphitically,
Elder Jake

LETTER 2: Mon, 07 Aug 2006

Subject: Hola!

Dear Mom and Dad,
The unexpected happened! I'm staying in Trophy Club for another 6 weeks. This will be the second area that I've spent 6 months in. Wow. Oh, Elder Hancock is getting transferred to Copperas Cove- pretty far South of here. However, I don't yet know the name of my new companion; he's brand new into the mission field! Straight from the MTC. Not completely sure how the train yet, but this will definitely be a learning experience. And fun. I get to meet him on Wednesday; all the missionaries who are being transferred, or whos companions are being transferred, meet at the Hurst stake center, and, after an awesome meeting presided be President Crockett, return to their areas. It's at that meeting that I'll first see my new companion. My only worry is that there's a possibility that we'll end up doing a lot of tracting; the area is doing really well with regard to its potenial, but you never know what will happen. Well, I figure that whatever happens, as long as we do our best to plan good activities, it's just what this elder needs. Otherwise, why would he be sent here?

Yesterday, we went to visit one of the families in the ward so that Elder Hancock could say goodbye. They weren't home, so we started walking back to the car. Before we got in, though, I looked over and saw some people doing some yard work. We decided to "contact" them, and quickly found out that the kid who was helping his Mom, was one that we had been hoping to work with- one who that member family was slowly trying to give us oppurtunity to teach. We got to meet his Mom, and he started asking some great questions. So, we headed inside the house, and taught him about the Restoration. He sincerely seems to want to read the Book of Mormon, and is seeking answers to his prayers. Although, since this is such a new situation, and anything could happen, I don't want to get my hopes up too high. I think we'll ask the member family (the Najera's) to read the Book of Mormon with him-outside of the appointments that we're praying to have with him and the Najeras.

So, there is great potential here. That is only one situation, and there may be more of those happening soon. Hope so!

Anyway, I forgot to bring the most recent letters with me, so I can't respond to them very well. Sorry. How are things in the Beehive? Still buzzin', I guess. (-:

Well, I love you! thanks for all the great support and prayers you give.
-Elder Jake

LETTER 3: Mon, 21 Aug 2006

Subject: Re: hows it going?
From: "Jacob Hathaway"

Wow, I guess that would explain it; I didn't have enough money on my normal card to pay for the groceries today, so I tried the Zion's bank card , planning to let you guys know. But, it mysteriously did not work. A charity fund? We do service at a thrift store, but I don't think I've ever donated any money with the card... wait, they don't even process cards at that place. Hmm... sounds like a new card might be a good idea. Ony thing is, since I never use it, I can never remember what the pin is. I'll look around- maybe it's still in an old planner.

Anyway, well, there's a recurring phenomenon I've noticed on my mission; most people are home in the nighttime... except for all of our investigators. So, we've been doing a lot of tracting. Oh yeah- I'm FINALLY getting going on that tape I was making a while back. Actually, I finished that one, but it leads into the next tape. Pretty soon, I should be sending both tapes home. We just have to fill in another half hour or so, which isn't hard with Elder Doll- he likes talking on the tape recorder, so you should hear a good amount of both of us.

So, not too much is new. Oh, we're now making a huge focus on part-member families. What we did before, was just stop by and talk to the families that we knew of. Now, we're trying a different approach; we made a list of about 40-50 families that we know of on the ward that are not all members of the church, and next to each of their names, is a set of boxes requesting information about who their friends are, what their interest level might be, etc., and we're giving that list to all of the leaders in the ward. If the feedback information is enough, we should be able to work pretty well with some of the part-member families through their friends. That way, it's not nearly as intimidating or pushy. The Ward Mission Leader is in on it, and we have permission from the bishop to request all the info we need to during PEC meeting. So, that's what's been happening.

Well, I better go. I love you, Mom and Dad!
-Elder Jake
