Shane :: Church, Life :: August 15, 2004 # Solo

It is common for members of the church to be asked to speak for 15 minutes during sacrament meeting shortly after they move to a new ward (a ward is like a congregation.) Tina and I were ready for this. We were asked to speak about honesty. I think the talks went fine, but as I spoke, I let on that I sing. The church loves music. [1] [2]

So I was asked to sing a solo today. I still get nervous about solos, but I think it went well anyway. I sang "I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked" [3], a poem by Daniel S. Twohig, set to music by Geoffrey O'Hara. I especially like the orchestration in this piece. Sue Rosenlof was very kind to accompany on the piano. I received many compliments, although members of the church are very forgiving of mistakes. I hope everyone paid more attention to the message than the messenger.

By the way, my first solo is a funny story. Toward the end of ninth grade, I sang Peter Cetera's "Glory of Love". I was so nervous (make that terrified) that in the weeks before the event, I bought a new set of clothes and skipped a lot of classes to install a custom sound system in the auditorium. The vice principal got on my case, thinking an honor student was turning bad! The night of the event, I sang as well as I could, but I thought I flopped. However, the next day I started to hear rumors that several girls suddenly wanted to date me. The vice principal eased up.

That's so cool, Shane. I didn't know you re-did the whole sound system for your solo! Hee hee... That's great.

I found your message after typing into my search window "bad church solo"- for I am dissapointed over my solo at last nights Good Friday service. I was excited to share the message in the lyrics because I had been given many gifts of grace over the past year. I too was asked to perform "I walked today where Jesus walked" by our music director. I got a good dose of adrenaline after my entry was not what I expected- Insted of counting measures- I counted on the 7 notes leading to the entry- 4 to relax 3 to breath then "I". When the accomp. left that out and just played the chord I must have relesed enough flight hormone to forget- but she smoothly replayed the chords so I could start without glitch- more unfortunately- i was handed the ministers mic which is set high and I felt myself flating out - or maybe it was my ear infection....I dont know- I was again counting on the mic I could sing into freely without thinking I was blasting the congregations eardrums. Well, my family thought I did fine and that all the words came through clearly. So I agree that the message is the important part- but it is sad that distraction can cause so much distress for the soloist. Perhaps it is Gods way of keeping us humbled until we never feel the urge to "perform" and keep yor heart on the message- still I will pray for an excellent delivery!

I have been trying to find this song....I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked, ordered a book but it was a different song. First heard this song during a Gaither Hour while they were in Israel. Have not been able to get it out of my mind since. I play the organ for church but want to find the music and also the words so I can play it for a soloist to sing it. I called the Word Music company and they found the book it was in but were out and not sure it was not out of print. Since I play by ear, I have played it from the recording I did of that Gaither program but we don't understand all the words. Can you help me? Thank you so much, Nita Schmidt

I am leaving for a tour in Israel in 3 days. I have been trying to recall the song I once knew, "I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked". However, now I can't remember the words. I would love to have them as I soon walk some of the places where Jesus walked. Can anyone help me? I don't even know if it's the poem by Daniel Twohig. If I could see even some of the words, I would recognize it. Thank you!
